HC Coombs Building

In 2016, the College of Asia and the Pacific at The Australian National University was awarded funding from the University for the refurbishment of the Coombs Building.

Since then, the College has worked closely with its contracted architect and builder, the University Facilities and Services team and the National Capital Authority to successful plan the Project.

Between 2016 and 2018, the College conducted comprehensive analysis and consultation to understand:

  • Current building conditions and compliance with the Building Code
  • Building occupancy and usage of services
  • Base building upgrades required as well as aspirations for the future of the building
  • The College received final approval from the National Capital Authority to proceed with the Project in May 2018 and plans to commence work in July 2018. The Project is expected to take between two to three years to complete. The project is phased, starting with the South Hexagon, followed by the Centre and North Hexagons.

Staff in the South Hexagon were relocated in June 2018. This included staff in the following teams:

  • Office of the Dean
  • Communications, Engagement and Marketing team
  • Education Services team
  • Finance team
  • Human Resources team
  • Research Services team
  • Facilities Services team
  • Arndt-Corden Department of Economics
  • Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language
  • Department of Pacific Affairs
  • School of Culture, History and Language.

Staff in the Centre Hexagon will be required to relocated between July – August 2019. This is expected to include staff in the following teams:

  • Centre for Excellence for the Dynamics of Language
  • Department of Pacific Affairs
  • School of Culture, History and Language
  • Indonesia Project
  • College of Arts and Social Sciences. 

All staff will be relocated to temporary accommodation in College buildings across campus. This may include refurbished accommodation in the South Hexagon. It is expected staff in the Centre Hexagon will remain in temporary accommodation for 12 months.

All staff will be supported by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Facilities and Services team who will lead the Project.
